Welcome to 5 Minute Fridays, my weekly newsletter, where I reveal my latest tips to help you get lean, boost energy and live a long active healthy life in Midlife.
This week I’m sharing a client story that really stayed with me.
Cindy is 67.
When she came to me, she wanted to lose weight, but like many women, the real reason was much deeper than the number on the scale.
She was starting to feel like her body was taking choices away from her.
She had to lift her legs into the car. She and her husband loved boating, but she could no longer pull herself back up the ladder. Something they had enjoyed together for years was starting to feel out of reach.
That is the part of midlife weight gain and muscle loss we do not talk about enough.
It is not just about jeans fitting differently.
It is about your world slowly getting smaller.
You start saying no to things you used to love. Not because you do not want to do them, but because your body no longer feels strong, capable, or dependable.
Cindy changed that.
She lost 27 lbs of fat, gained 7 lbs of muscle, and more importantly, started getting her independence back.
This is why I care so much about strength training, protein, and having a real plan after 50.
Because the goal is not just to lose weight.
The goal is to build a body that lets you keep living your life.
Here is your 5 Minute Friday:
1. Cindy’s story is about more than weight loss
When Cindy started, she wanted to lose weight.
Of course she did.
She had had weight loss surgery which was successful but in time the weight crept back on.
Most women come to me because they want the scale to move, their clothes to fit better, and their body to feel like their own again.
But with Cindy, there was something much bigger happening.
She was losing confidence in her body.
She had to lift her leg into the car.
She could no longer go boating with her husband because she could not pull herself up the ladder.
That matters.
Because when your body starts losing strength, your world starts getting smaller.
You do less. You avoid more. You stop doing things you used to love. You start making decisions based on what your body can no longer handle.
That is why Cindy’s transformation is so powerful.
She lost 27 lbs of fat.
She gained 7 lbs of muscle.
But the real win is that she got stronger.
Now she can get into the car more easily.
She can go boating again.
She can do the things that made her feel like herself.
That is what getting your life back looks like.

2. Yes, women can still build muscle after 50
Cindy Before and After Coaching with Ruth
One of the biggest myths I hear from women in midlife is this:
“I’m too old to build muscle now.”
No, you are not.
Your body does change after menopause. Muscle loss can happen faster. Recovery may take more attention. You may not be able to train exactly like you did at 30.
But your muscles still respond to the right signal.
Research supports this. A 2024 study on postmenopausal and older women found that resistance training improved muscle hypertrophy. A 2023 systematic review also found that exercise training improves body composition in postmenopausal women, with resistance training being effective for muscle gain.
That does not mean you need to train like a bodybuilder.
It means you need to give your muscles a reason to stay.
That reason is progressive strength training.
Not random workouts. Not endless cardio. Not tiny pink dumbbells forever. Not starving yourself and hoping the scale moves.
You need enough protein, enough resistance, enough recovery, and enough consistency for your body to adapt.
This is why Cindy’s story matters.
At 67, she did not just lose weight.
She gained muscle.
And that muscle showed up in real life.
Getting into the car. Getting back into the boat. Moving with more confidence. Feeling capable again.
Muscle after 50 is not just about looking toned.
It is about protecting your independence.
3. Cindy did not need a complicated plan
Cindy did not need a magic supplement.
She did not need to starve herself.
She did not need to exercise for hours every day.
She needed a clear plan.
Here’s what moved the needle:
Eating enough protein
Strength training consistently
Following calories and macros that matched her goal
Tracking progress properly
Adjusting when needed
Staying consistent long enough for her body to change
Nothing extreme.
Nothing trendy.
Nothing complicated for the sake of being complicated.
Just the right plan, followed consistently, with coaching and accountability.
That is the part most women are missing.
They do not need more random information.
They need a system they can actually follow.
And they need someone helping them adjust when life gets busy, motivation drops, or the scale does something annoying.
That is coaching.
My Favourite Thing this Week
My favourite thing this week is seeing Cindy tell her own story.
Numbers are great.
Losing 27 lbs of fat is amazing.
Gaining 7 lbs of muscle at 67 is even better.
But hearing her talk about getting her independence back is the part that matters most.
Because this work is not just about having a smaller body.
It is about having a stronger body.
A body that lets you travel, hike, bike, boat, lift, climb, move, and keep saying yes to your life.
That is the win.
Client of the Week
This week’s client of the week is Cindy.
When Cindy started, she was not just frustrated with her weight.
She was frustrated by what her body could no longer do.
She had to lift her legs into her car.
She had stopped boating with her husband because getting back into the boat had become too difficult.
She felt like her independence was slipping.
But Cindy followed the plan.
She built strength.
She lost fat.
She gained muscle.
And now she is doing things again that she thought she might have to give up.
