  • It’s bigger than weight loss

Hey friend!

Welcome to this week’s Five Minute Friday.

This week’s video is a little different because I am talking about the 10 things I STOPPED doing to lose 30 pounds of fat.

And honestly, some of them were harder to stop than they should have been.

Because when you are trying to lose weight after 50, it is very easy to think you need to do more.

However, what I realized is that sometimes we need less……

How the scale can wreck your progress

One of the biggest mistakes women make in midlife is measuring progress with only one number.

The weight on the bathroom scale.

I get it.

I used the scale too. I still do.

But the scale does not tell the whole story.

👉 It does not tell you if you are losing fat and gaining muscle.

👉 It does not tell you if your body composition is changing.

👉 It does not tell you if your strength training is working.

👉 It does not tell you if your body is becoming healthier, more capable and more resilient.

In fact sometimes when we are gaining muscle, losing fat and becoming more metabolically fit the scale can go UP!

That is why body composition matters so much.

When I started my own weight-loss mission after gaining 30 pounds, I knew I did not want to just become a smaller, weaker version of myself.

I wanted to lose fat and build muscle.

I wanted to be strong.

I wanted to be able to hike, bike, lift, jump, travel and live my life without feeling like my body was holding me back.

That is why I think having better data can be incredibly helpful.

❤️ My favourite thing this week! Better than a scale

My favourite thing this week is the Hume body analyzer.

I am genuinely excited to share this because I believe body composition tracking is one of the most useful tools women can use in midlife.

Most of us have been trained to obsess over weight.

But weight alone is a blunt tool.

The Hume body analyzer gives you a much better picture of what is actually happening inside your body. It helps you look beyond the number on the scale and track things like body fat, muscle mass and other health markers that matter when you are trying to build a stronger body after 50.

I’m super happy that my visceral fat is WAY DOWN. My body fat percentage is in the low range for my age. I’d like to get it down to 21% and it is steadily decreasing as I gain muscle. Also happy that my metabolic age is 13 years younger than I actually am. Aiming to get back to my 40’s and it’s just around the corner!

There is so much more data than what I have shown here that is useful to see if what you are doing is working.

You see, gaining muscle and losing fat matters because two women can weigh the same and have completely different bodies.

One may be losing muscle and getting weaker.

The other may be building muscle, losing fat and completely changing her shape, even if the scale is moving slowly.

This is why I keep saying the goal is not to become weak and skinny.

The goal is to become leaner, stronger and more capable.

I love when I get messages like this from clients. Many people start out just wanting to lose weight but there really is a much bigger picture when we think about aging strong and healthy.
